A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words

Article by, Adrian Vatchinsky

Sometimes a picture really is worth a thousand words. NASA has recently released pictures from the Cassini probe which in my humble opinion are truly breathtaking. I will let you all just take a look, and check this apod link out for the high res pic!

An even more interesting video I came across however takes images like the one above and actually puts together a "fly by" film of the Cassini spacecraft. Knowing that these are real images, not animations or models, really speaks for the beauty found around us!

The wonders of spheres

Article by, Adrian Vatchinsky

This is a pretty interesting video I was shown at a meeting of NYU's Mathematical Society. It does not have anything direct to do with physics (unless you make some grossly exaggerated connections) but I still think it is very fascinating to see!

How the Milky Way Formed

Article by, Adrian Vatchinsky

For all those stuck inside today because of Hurricane Irene, you may like to take a few minutes and check out this fascinating video depicting a simulation of how the Milky Way Galaxy formed.

The process took billions of years, but just imagine living during this tumultuous time of the galaxy's lifetime. As of now, our galaxy is pretty stable and normal, but it is predicted that we will undergo a collision/merger with our neighbor the Andromeda Galaxy in the coming future!

Thanks Dominic Wilmes for sending this in!

Earth: Before and After

Article by, Adrian Vatchinsky

Before and after pics are great right! We always see them during dieting or exercising informorcials and reality TV shows seem to love making before and after shots. Well NASA has hoped on the bandwagon and used its shiny orbital cameras to take some neat pictures of the Earth itself, before and after it hit puberty.

Sounds of the Solar System

Article by, Adrian Vatchinsky

Ever wonder what the planets and objects around us sound like? Well even if you didn't here is your chance to check them out. Although these are not real sounds which we can hear with our ears but instead are sounds derived from data gathered by the Voyager spacecrafts, the noises are none the less amazing and even haunting at certain points.

For a more detailed explanation check out below (or the following link) which contains sound samples recorded by the University of Iowa with explanations as to how the sounds arise!

Scale of the Universe

Article by, Adrian Vatchinsky

The Universe is really pretty varied. From distances which make a flight from New York to Tokyo seem like a blink of the eye to particles that make an ant into a giant, there just is such a range sizes around us!

This website is more of a tool to help people put things in perspective and realize just how small....and yet giant we all are.

(Plus it has some soothing music to help you contemplate on the size of an egg)

An awesome simulation of a supernovae! If only we could get so close in person.
